Where does the money raised by the Merrimac PTO go?

Twice yearly, the Merrimac PTO awards a portion of our budget to special requests submitted to us by Sweetsir and Donaghue teachers and staff.  These requests are generally for classroom and extracurricular supplies that benefit all students, such as iPad’s, ELMO projectors, and playground equipment.

The following form should be used by staff members of the Helen R. Donaghue and Frederick N. Sweetsir Schools in Merrimac, MA.  Please print the form, fill in the requested information, and submit it directly to the PTO via our mailbox at your school

Cultural Events

The past several years the PTO has been able to set aside $10,000 ($5,000 per school) to be used for the educational enrichment of our children.  The amounts are divided equally between grade levels.  The grade level teams get together and decide how to best use these funds.  In the past, this money has been used towards offsite and in-house field trips.  We are proud to be able to defray costs and help bring the student’s curriculum to life.

Merrimac PTO Scholarship

We annually give a $1,000.00 scholarship to a graduating Merrimac Senior.  Applications are available at both Pentucket High School and Whittier Vocational High School.  A committee of Merrimac teachers and parents reviews all applications and rewards the scholarships based on academic success, volunteerism, involvement in extra curricular activities and overall need.

The Jean Connor Scholarship Fund

Ms. Jean Connor, a beloved second grade teacher from 1970–2005, died tragically in June of 2005. Through the years, she shared with her students her love of the arts and she touched the hearts of all who knew her, both students and parents alike. It is because of this special gift, that the Merrimac PTO and Ms. Connor’s family wanted to keep her love of the arts alive. She had a special place in her heart for those children who had to struggle just a little harder to achieve or who showed a desire or talent but were unable to pursue their interests because of financial constraints. She always wished that there was a way to assist these students. Accordingly, the Connor family has decided that a scholarship in her name would be a fitting tribute to her memory. This scholarship would be used to send a student or students to a camp or lessons that they would otherwise be unable to attend. The Merrimac PTO is proud to honor her memory with this scholarship.

An application for this scholarship is provided to every student in our schools. Please feel free to fill out the application and return it to the Sweetsir School by May 5, 2017. The families that are awarded a scholarship will be notified. If you have any questions about this scholarship, please contact Carol Ruest at 978-346-8319 or Cathy Connor at 978-462-9196.

Thank you for your continued support,

Holiday Helper

The PTO is a proud contributor to this yearly event. This is a total community effort by many local organizations, to come to the support of families in need, within our own community. For many years, the PTO has purchased, with our funds, new clothing for the deserving families.
